In https://github.com/jpadilla/pyjwt/commit/8f2601050339b0efcba1d7b44f646bc520e8b700 the pytest version requirement was hard coded to be exactly 2.7.3 to avoid a upstream bug that was fixed, but not yet released. 



That version seems to have long since been released. pytest 3.0.7 seems to run the tests fine here.
